2025 SEASON
AUGUST 30-SEPTEMBER 6
Art of the String Quartet I: Late Beethoven and Ethel Smyth

Ludwig van Beethoven | String Quartet in A minor, Op 132 (1825)
Ethel Smyth | String Quartet in E minor, Andante (1912)

At the end of his life, Beethoven, by that point fully deaf, focused his remaining creative energies on the string quartet repertoire, writing some of his most personal and spiritual works in his final years on earth. In the summer of 1825, recovering from a long and painful illness, inscribed the following title to the third movement: “Song of Thanksgiving to the Deity from a convalescent in the Lydian mode.” Also featured on this program is the work of Dame Ethel Smyth, an acclaimed but underrecognizd composer and advocate for women’s rights. Smyth’s E minor Quartet was inspired by the late quartets of Beethoven.
